You chair the Recompete Coalition that brought in $35.6 million on the promise of hundreds of family-wage jobs. Two years in, the reported placement number is 21, the five-year target has already been cut from 900 to 603, and at least one approved scope of work funds two new salaried government positions so that three to five people might enroll and one or two might actually get work.
The same grant is also buying a hydroseeder and a mini excavator so a tribally owned corporation that already brings in tens of millions in revenue can enter a line of work local taxpaying businesses already do. As chair, how do you justify calling this a jobs program for distressed workers when the first results are government payroll, subsidized equipment for an established enterprise, and placement numbers that are far behind the original claim?
In my humble and uneducated opinion, the 603 target figure is a red flag of arrogance put forth by someone with total disregard for the intelligence of anyone reading that projection. To think one could be that accurate is unbelievable.
Regarding Recompete: Valuable funding turned into "The Grift". I'd be interested to know what the total compensation is for sitting on all these NGO boards.
As Governor Lepetomane (Mel Brooks) so sagely said in Blazing Saddles: "We've got to protect our phony-baloney jobs, gentlemen!" And how do we do that, Mr. French? For starters, we give oodles of government money to local tribes that are sovereign nations with impressive budgets and tax advantages, money that creates more government jobs with salary and benefit packages unobtainable by many in the private sector, and -- to no one's real surprise -- we also buy a sovereign nation equipment so they can start a business that competes directly with taxpaying private citizen's businesses. Since they represent a very large and motivated voting bloc, voila! As stated before, the turnout for those who wish change from the current cycle of government must be massive for said change to have a snowball's chance of occurring.
Jeff amazing story on the larceny of French he added 21 new jobs and his policies have cost us Job losses. The whole story of this scenario is that how can he be serious about continuing this waste of money. Stop the bleeding of our tax $ and vote JAKE
Houston, we have a problem. How is this not news being picked up by the PDN or Sequim Gazette? Hire 2 people with grant money to be able to get 1 person a living wage job?
How is this not Fraud, Waste, or Abuse? Millions of dollars, wasted.
The citizens of Clallam County are being hoodwinked, AGAIN!
This will clearly end up being a goat-rope of epic proportions, brought to us by Mike French.
We need accountability. We need someone focused on the efficient use of our taxes, not someone who funnels grant money to curry political favor.
We need Jake Seegers. We need organic tax base growth from attracting private business to the county, not more grants.
MK agreed, NGOs are the biggest source of fraud in the county and Mike French is one of them that is in the thick of it. We can pick that apple off the vine this year and I damn know we will!
PDN and the Sequim Goolashrr couldn’t possibly address a controversial (if not criminal) activity in this county. That would cause the other 17 people that get news to cancel the (paper)s I’m certain I have seen as many ground beef sales as required in a life time. The editors must feel happy turning legacy news in to the shopping guide. Are they ever embarrassed?hey, how much is burger this week, joke I don eat things that can see their killer.
The line "there's no success like failure / and that failure's no success at all" from the song "Love Minus Zero/No Limit" by Bob Dylan starts playing in my head whenever Recompete comes to mind.
Rita, your quote of Bob Dylan falls into exactly that of failure:
MIKE FRENCH WAVES A FLAG OF VICTORY FOR HIS PART IN THE RECOMPETE AWARD AS HIS SIGN OF SUCCESS WHEN IN REALITY IT IS AN AWARD FOR HIS AND OTHER LEADERS SIGNS OF FAILURE.
The fact that CC even got an award is telling. The ‘winners’ were chosen from those counties that were the most economically depressed places in the country. The selection process was run more like an Miss USA Beauty Pageant, getting down to the ‘Finalist’ and the eventual ‘Winners’. In this case the awardees didn’t even demonstrate any sort of talent or beauty, but rather whose counties failed the most.
Awardees and Finalist - The six awardees were selected from a highly competitive group of 22 Finalists. The two-phase program saw an UNPRECEDENTED 565 (Phase 1) APPLICATIONS, requesting more than $6 billion in funding. The Finalists, announced in December 2023, represented urban, rural, and Tribal communities SPANNING 20 STATES AND TERRITORIES.
TRIBAL AUTOMATIC ELIGIBILITY – Just sit back and get more money.
Data collection: Tribal data. Participants asked if Tribes might be able to provide and self-certify their own data sources, such as data from academic research, given many mainstream data sources are not fully accurate. In response to this feedback, EDA will accept other data sources from Tribes to support their eligibility and level of distress (THOUGH AS NOTED ABOVE, ALL TRIBAL LANDS WILL BE ELIGIBLE BY DEFAULT FOR THIS PROGRAM)
It feels like I just spent the day in room 101 in Oceania. Let's hire two people, with tax dollars, to train one person for one living wage job, most likely paid for with grant (tax) dollars. But wait, Mike French said he doesn't feel that its government's job to create jobs. That's how he answered my question at last commissioners forum. Mike French can say one thing and do another, without flinching. Mark Curtis is right, figures don't lie, but liars can figure. As a side note, the commissioners all agreed o rename the "Commissioners Forum" to "Citizens Forum". Another falsehood? I guess I should've learned to play piano, instead of shoveling snow.
"Let's hire two people, with tax dollars, to train one person for one living wage job..." I'm sure the two people hired to train the one are making more than a living wage and more than the average salary in CC so there is that. Perhaps that's French's solution - give everyone a government job and make them beholden to him for it.
My son's been out of work for almost two years. Unless you work in government social programs or health care, there are no "family wage" jobs in Clallam. And those jobs go to insiders, friends and family members.
Clallam County Commissioners aren't encouraging organic economic growth. That's the problem.
NGOs require pre-disposed group think for employment. It's a form of pre-hire contructive-termination of a subset of available employment talent that is forbidden to compete for work.
Mine, too, is out of work. Crime in Seattle motivated him to move during Covid when he could work remotely from home.
Two weeks after we moved here, (moving was not easy at our ages) he informed us that he had been laid off. That was over two years ago. He decided to start his own business. So far nothing. And what the state cost him and put him through to be licensed and bonded.
Now instead of him helping us out, we're helping him out. I worry so much about health insurance.
For Friday and Saturday podcasts, I'll be talking with the Strait Shooter about 9/11 on Friday, our memories of the day, that time in America, his activation in the National Guard, and what is happening now with the DSA attacking America.
Saturday will be about the Seegers Foundation, diving into the donations -- all of them -- that the foundation makes, what skunks don't want people to know about the giving that goes on through the foundation, and how the MAGA title gets put on Jake and Marcia Kelbon to distract from local issues.
Fantastic Jeff, Terri, Eric, Lyle, Teresa, Mark C., and Mark on Tuesday! You all provided deepth to all of our concerns. I very much appreciate hearing you and I am proud to know you. Scope of Work is what French says he reads and relies on to make his decisions on proposals he has to vote on. To me that means he doesn't read the rest of the contract or proposals. And this Recompete grant is not what CC needs. If the grant was written and sold to promise the public the much needed increase in local training and employment for 900 people (of certain skin colors and DNA and gender ) and is NOW reduced by 33%, that is cheating. Nobody likes a cheater. Is French cheating? Is Ozias cheating? Are the Tribes cheating? Recompete is a loser for CC.
Call it what it looks like from the cheap seats: public money used as political sway. Recompete is federal cash, but the decisions, the liaison meetings, the subawards, and the endorsements are local. Hundreds of people on coalition, nonprofit, and government payrolls have a reason to prefer the man who keeps the faucet open. A challenger with no grant to pass around is not competing on equal ground.
We have smoked on the matter and we have decided....we will build another layer....to do what the other layers tell us to do.. A man named French shook our hand and said endeavor to persevere. They stood us in a line....and took our pictures and the newspapers said Indians vow to endeavor to persevere...
Our Government has repeatedly proven it cannot compete with private enterprise. Further it should not even be attempting to. I offer Space X returning its rocket to its launching pad, while Government funded rockets burn in the atmosphere or sink at sea. Government has also errantly entered its inefficiency into the minority-ism business. With each of us being genetically unique and a minority of one how is Government deciding what characteristics, ancestry, nationality, gender or sexual orientation should be helped ? Another example; Government gives a relatively small group of citizens gaming rights and resource harvesting rights not available to most of the citizenry, which provides inordinate income to the anointed small group, again not available to most. Then Government certifies that same small group of citizens as a "minority business enterprise", ( MBE ), which provides them preferential access to any and all public works projects. All these efforts to make us "equal", when with our genetic uniqueness, equality is not attainable. So Government is applying its proven inefficiency to an unattainable goal and spending huge sums of taxpayer dollars in doing so. Choose your voting choices wisely.
Garry, Below was in the yesterdays Tribal Business News, but it’s hard to find the funding as the Tribe will not release that information. IMO if the Tribe was paying for it they would have widely distributed the information. You can get a few free articles per month, otherwise you have to subscribe. https://tribalbusinessnews.com/
You would be shocked at the amount of government funding going for Tribal investments, it has grown long legs in the past 10 years and is in full sprint mode now. I’m expecting to hear JST plans to put in a Data Center on tribal owned lands or if they need to acquire more land to do it. We’ll see
September 9, 2026 Quinault-owned Toptana breaks ground on subsea cable landing station
The Quinault Indian Nation has begun construction on Washington’s first subsea cable landing station built in more than 25 years, with Amazon Web Services as its first customer.
Thank you. Glad to see I am not alone in trying to reconcile today's "Tribes" exploitation of technology they had no part in creating and their "usual and accustomed" practices. Particularly the highly revered ancestral practice of operating casinos.
Just 7 months ago JST received a state grant for $1,365,692. I stumble on these all the time. I just found this one today, but the Jamestown tribe collects much more than we think, through State, Federal and yes, Clallam County. We will never know how much, but just driving through Blyn, (Allen’s ‘Oz’) it is quite apparent. It far exceeds the ah factor of anything built in Clallam County.
March 11, 2026 Commerce awards $16.8 million for tribal clean energy and resilience projects. The projects are part of the state’s effort to invest in tribal energy sovereignty, a key component of Washington’s 2021 State Energy Strategy and climate laws, including the Climate Commitment Act and the Healthy Environment for All (HEAL) Act.
Tribal Clean Energy Grants Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe (Sequim): $1,365,692 for the Dungeness River Nature Center Microgrid Resilience Project, to install a 129.6 kW DC solar array with a 125 kW battery energy storage system that will support Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe’s long-term energy sovereignty.
Clearly I need no more encouragement on the tribal, minority-ism, "native", indigenous, land back etc. front. Actually I hold no remorse against those claiming tribal status other than their claiming more me and less for thee. Ron Allen has been a masterful business manager. The BIA is an antiquated agency that has far outlived its usefulness. The BIA now exists to serve dead people; impractical at best. Human history is rife with conquered areas, peoples and civilizations, but to the losers the spoils has no logic. Equal friends and neighbors is my hope. Equal when convenient and sovereign when convenient is not.
This just kills me. So sick to see a small group be so agenda driven that they have no care that they are driving out tax paying citizens and killing of CC as a liveable place.
I am sure I am not the only senior who is to poor to move anymore but can't afford to stay.
2 years ago he knocked on my door asking for our votes. He told my wife and I he had a plan to create homes for people who needed it. I asked him if he wanted to bet and of course no response.....such a phony

Maybe they had to adjust for inflation ; )
Misappropriation of public funds is a violation 'M FRENCH'.
Jeff, I just want to thank you for all your hard work that you put in for this county. Keep it going!
You got it S.I., let's keep it going together!
I'll second that.

Kristin, the same reason a burglar comes in the night dressed in black. Stealing is an art.
A public records request is possible.
Not just the county, the country. Need an audit or a DOGE. Fraud and abuse needs to be rooted out and people punished.
Never hear a “Nay” should concern everyone in Clallam County!
