Thank you for all your hard work digging into these issues. I live on the west end and had NO idea what was happening in our county. We are the forgotten unrepresented people out here. Why don't you run for county commissioner! Would definitely vote for you!

Thanks again Jeff. On that note while in downtown Sequim, I stopped and asked the firefighters on the corner, while they were holding signs for the approval of

The new Levy. I asked them if they had asked the commission to cut the funding for Habitat, before asking us to dole out more tax money. They had ZERO idea that clallam county was funding them. Goes to show you your reporting is only reaching so far. Great work!

Clallam County, itself does not directly fund Clallam County Fire District 3 (CCFD3) as CCFD3 is separate junior taxing entity (like library, etc.) While it is true that the County collects CCFD3's tax levies on their behalf and then distributes the collected taxes to CCFD3 on a monthly basis, CCFD3's budget is not set by the County. CCFD's budget is a stand alone budget. For those wishing to find out more about the Fire District, their Commissioners and their budget and operations, please visit www.ccfd3.org.

Unfortunately Jeff's messages aren't going to appear any time soon in the PDN, Sequim Gazette or any local radio station. Question folks, "How to inform Clallam County voters?"

Sequim City Council was (and maybe still is?) looking at a special taxing district to handle certain costs associated with east side of town development.

Is the motto of the Clallam County Commissioners "The Gentrification of Clallam County" ?

I so appreciate your common sense. I am all in with the conclusion of this publication. I am not intimate with how our Government morphed from infrastructure management, law enforcement and safety to charity and feel good projects, but it is unsustainable. We have reached the point of Government running out of other people's money.

White guilt and White corruption. There is a certain point in which benevolence collides with economic factors. Deficit spending only functions in a growing economy. I wish Sequim were Vail Colorado or Jackson Hole Wyoming but affordable housing units will not attract the types of people who pay any tax. Just tonight when I visited QFC a tweeker was examining cars in the parking lot. When I first moved here I did not see locks on cigarettes and booze. Wealthy individuals who pay taxes do not wish to live in an area where they might have their skull crushed by a miscreant while pumping gas.

Many capitalists are cultural Marxists IMO. Demographics do affect economic growth. Importing slave labor does reduce costs temporary but it destroys the middle class which is the foundation of a growing economy. When Adam Smith proposed his "free hand" theory of a market economy he did not assume that the Western world would be flooded with people from indigent regions many of whom are tribal and only interested in compensation from government resources. All humans are not the same.

Ha Ha the type of Laissez-faire capitalism described by Ayn Rand will probably never exist because of human empathy and government corruption. If a modern corporation wishes to grow it need the sanction of government officials. If the company does not hire the proper number of females and non Whites prepare for litigation. That is not capitalism.

Cutting essential services. Well, go ahead. Cut funding for the fire department in Blyn. Jamestown can afford to take it over. Police services? Cut response from tribal lands. If Jamestown won't pay for services through taxes, they can afford to provide their own. Last article reporting their annual take was $86M/year. They can afford services.

...and don't likely have "personal use". How often do responsible people who pay taxes ever "need" their services? Sure, they pull us over if we speed. They respond to an occasional theft, but it rarely leads to much... you know. This kind of stuff. Fire? Some electrician screwed up royally, or there was a dumb user somewhere. Health. Well, if I need to go to the hospital, I'm glad to have that service, but my insurance pays for that, which I pay premiums for. So, if Jamestown has a medical emergency, they do have the Jamestown clinic.

Honestly, it's all so ridiculous! I'm only making light of the situation because it's basically "unfixable". Too much involved.

Perhaps if our government had never involved itself in the cost of medicine the price might be cheaper. Medical plans merely add more bureaucracy and possibly expense. Unusual medical cases should be treated separately and perhaps on an individual basis. The number of indigents who don't pay will bankrupt the system when the economy reaches a recession.

The net result of all this is a flight from the crazy “blue” states to more sane places. We did 5 years ago and not regretted it for a minute! And it’s not just taxes - our utilities are HALF what they were in Washington, gas prices are 30% less, and crime is nonexistent. Just this week we had dinner with friends who moved out of Clallam for all of the reasons you detail so eloquently. Thank you for being both the voice of reason and adding some transparency to the internal corruption all around Clallam County. God Bless you and for your sake, and everyone else, I hope it gets better!

Exactly! We have lived in what is now Corrupt Clallam County for 37 years and are in the process to move to a sane place. The once warm and welcoming people of Sequim have disappeared...it is now a cabal filled with bullies, filth, crime, and hopelessness. We will always love what once was Sequim, but don't love the Sequim of today...

Clallam County (and state) politicians are following Gavin Newsom's lead in running the state into the ground, turning a beautiful state and area into a utopia for the drug addicts, ne'er do wells, and low-hanging fruit for the Tribes to acquire for pennies on the dollar.

Just wait to see how many hard-working taxpayers remain after they impose a tidal wave tax, an asteroid tax, a sun-is-burning-out tax, leaving only the bums and the "gimmes" with no one to pay for it.

I'm all for a tax revolt, but how will that work without all of us loosing our homes?

Expand full comment
Steve O.'s avatar

I actually believe that when taxes are lowered revenues increase because of business investment. The tax base is increased when a business is profitable and taxes lower the expense. A house in a prosperous neighborhood will increase in value. The mortgage companies understand this. Lowering lending rates helps borrowers. Introducing homeless junkies into a neighborhood decimates property values. Government officials though seldom suffer.

Well the Democrat leadership in this state and county don't seem to understand the concept of lowering taxes to increase revenue. I'm fed up even paying property taxes anymore.

Maybe what is going on in Washington DC is an indication that Big Daddy's Mother Lode back East is going to dry up over the next 4 years. That said, will the people in Olympia then continue to raise taxes to maintain essential state services, and the County follow suit and continue to raise taxes to maintain essential county services.

That could certainly be it. MUCH of the "aid" turns into pocket money for politicians, so the incentives are high indeed.

The collapse has already started. We are going down a road that ends at a cliff and there isnt a roundabout to turn us back in the right direction. With reckless spending and mail in voting our so called leaders will continue to put us down this path because there is nothing to put them in check. This is greed at its finest.

I think the process of Evolution precedes technological innovation by many centuries. The most powerful men now are effeminate. Yet figures displaying the warrior gene are still popular in films. Mixed martial arts competitions are more popular than ever. Feminism has not conquered the male spirit. Hegel, Nietzsche and Aristotle all described the uncontrollable "will" that motivates us. Why should anyone be ashamed of it. Yet so much is devoted to meaningless enterprises. I confess I owned three motorcycles and am lucky to have four limbs.

Articles like this one are why you are skyrocketing in your posts and podcasts. We, the taxpayers, are not informed enough to not at all about our proposed tax increases and what they are truly used for. Here is the little secret that those 3 hamsters (County Commissioners) don't want to recognize: How badly they need us. Without us CC becomes Detroit. I propose finding an NGO to move all tax-paying citizens out of Clallam County to other areas of the country that like us enough to respect us. Until then, see everyone at the meetings to fight for any semblance of respect.
