LOL Dr. Sarah my thought process is data dependent hence I am suspicious of a glossy brochure and a free lunch. Your analysis almost inspired me to quote P.T. Barnum.

THE COUNTY IS COMING ALIVE!

This article is a mirrored reflection of how our Clallam County government is run. Citizens are given vague reassurances that programs are working, money is well spent without responding to basic questions or following good governance of the people and for the people.

CITIZENS ARE TAKING OUR COUNTY BACK!

As Jeff wrote: “This is the county’s “new normal” when it’s healthy: residents showing up informed—and government having to respond”

RESIDENTS ARE EVALUATING THE CREDIBILITY OF THE CLALLAM COUNTY COMMISSIONERS. CHANGES NEED TO BE MADE STARTING NOW.

Jennifer's avatar

Talk about things moving and shaking in Clallam County, this just now came out: WE ARE TAKING BACK CLALLAM COUNTY! Thank you for your reporting Anthony Tomashefsky of Olympic Herald!

Breaking: Commissioner Brian Parker No Longer Employed At Clallam County Superior Court

Anthony Tomashefsky

READ IN APP

The Olympic Herald confirmed this afternoon that Brian Parker is no longer employed as a Court Commissioner for the Clallam County Superior Court. Parker, who served as the Family Law Court Commissioner, had recently faced public scrutiny. Details regarding his departure remain limited at this time.

This story is developing.

Denise Lapio's avatar

The Olympic Herald did a stand-up job bringing this story and all its updates to the public.

Outstanding work Patriot Jennifer~!

I'm evaluating the incredulousness of their marxist psychopathy!

They HAVE TO GO! Bus tickets to California or Antarctica would be good!😆

Michael Heath's avatar

Good one Patriot Robert James~!

Many Americans would be inclined to blindly accept the obvious "Chinese connection" (CCP?), especially since it was "routed" through Canada as evidenced by at least one of these "Luminary Resorts" players, however, may I suggest one-way tickets to mainland China that would likely be most appropriate~? Ha~! No return agreement of course ;-) I have no problem with folks of Chinese ancestry; however, I definitely do have a HUGE problem with Chinese funded concerns, especially with CCP connections, that rob Americans of their economic opportunities, health, freedoms, and/or American national security risks~!

Have a fun day~!

Sincerely, Mike

This is such wonderful news of our community coming together!

I wonder if they even addressed the fact with this reflective outer covering, say some Elk happen across close by and say a male she’s his reflection and decides to go head into it thinking it’s another male. Not only that the reflection alone seems to me during certain times of the day could be blinding. Just a thought.

jedjennings50's avatar

Oh no! The elk will hurt someone and they will sue us. Take our money and build more.

Then they will drink all the water and kill the fish. How can we lose anymore?

Robert James's avatar

Dang, Jed! You took the words right out of my subconscious!🤓

Denise Lapio's avatar

Good, good thoughts.

ABeetlebaum's avatar

Birds - devastating.

Jennifer's avatar

ABeetle, I agree, I had to put up bird reflectors just for the few windows I had after a some flew into the windows (it was always AFTER I cleaned the windows) Some broke their necks immediately, but some didn't. It horrified me to watch them die while trying to keep them warm in a towel. The reflectors I stickered on the windows ended that thank god!

Robert James's avatar

And some of the stickers bring rainbows into the house when the sun is out.

We have very few bird-strikes now after the stickers installed.🙂

ABeetlebaum's avatar

yes, we had the same thing happen - windows on both sides of house - husband made the rows of string hanging from rods in front of windows and it really works! We had many robins and even our hummers ran into them.

Jennifer's avatar

ABeetle, I had a spanish tiered fountain in Az, I found 3 hummers drowned on the top tier. Honestly made me sick. So I wrapped some wire around so they could hang on when taking their bath. It solved the problem, but 20 years later I feel guilty because I caused their demise.

If these simple tricks work, it is very well worth it.

ABeetlebaum's avatar

aooohhh :( that makes me sad! I would feel bad too. I love all the birdies here. SO many! On a much happier note, the other day, we watched the eagle pair mating in our douglas fir trees!

Robert James's avatar

Repent and forgive yourself, you evil hummingbird killer!😆

I found one with its tongue frozen to a red garden shovel, it was so hungry it tried to lick frozen red metal. I got it off but it didn't do its tongue any good and that tongue is a pretty big deal in a hummingbird's world!

We pretty much stopped the feeding (all birds) unless the weather gets really extreme...we see less birds but are not 'interfering' in the natural ebb and flow.

We saved some Widgeons in that extreme Winter (for us) in 2019/20 by scraping snow off the lawn and they MOBBED that grass and didn't even know what the grain we put out was...but they figured it out.

They were so cold and starved they could barely fly and we definitely got them through the worst of it, the rest is up to nature and them.

Live and learn or live and don't learn are pretty much our only options.

I like to think I'm learning but probably behind the curve...more forgiveness needed!😆

Michael Heath's avatar

Very good thought Patriot Evrita Romero~!

Yes, not only the elk would be confused by these "highly reflective disasters", but ALL wildlife would be adversely effective as well, I wonder how many birds would be killed by them crashing into these "reflective tin cans"? These atrocious bird killers of commercial windmills are not killing enough birds??? Geeeze! Well, look on the "bright side" (sarcastic pun intended), the idiots who actually buy these disastrous eye sores, will in short order find that they will lose their so-called "shiny appeal" as they soon become dirty and start to experience erosion of their initial "sales room finish"~! Not to even mention the unsightly (and I am sure VERY expensive to repair) odd dent and/or damage that they will of course over time sustain... HA~! How many "owners" of these shiny aluminum cans are EVER going to take the time and money to regularly clean, polish, and/or repair them~? "Honey, go out and wash, scrub, and polish our house today"~! Ha Ha Ha Ha~! Fat chance~! I remember the old, yet definitely still currently appropriate expression; "A Pig In A Poke"~!

Sincerely, Mike

I'M BEAMING!

Thank you so much Jeff for this article, it means so much. Despite the proposal being submitted in November, I found out about it in mid-January through a friend's Facebook post. Then, the hearing was the first week of February. So I felt like a madwoman scrambling to investigate all of these threads and weaving them together into a narrative. Jeff, your article gave new perspective and sharpness to the story. I'm really grateful.

The BEST part of this is reading all of your comments in support!! This process has been exhausting, I work full days and then spend weekends and evenings researching and writing. I wake up early thinking about it, I'm spending time talking to neighbors and gathering evidence. Reading through your comments is giving me another wave of energy.

We now have until February 25th to submit more evidence to the hearings examiner. If you feel inspired by this post, please submit your objections to Enrique.Valenzuela@clallamcountywa.gov

Jennifer's avatar

Heather, your super powers are amazing! You are making a difference in many ways by inspiring a spirit of unity. THANK YOU!

Denise Lapio's avatar

Wow! Heather is standing up for herself and her community. She did the job the county representatives should have done. I guess they've been distracted by all of those awards banquets. I know Jeff and Jake will keep us posted on any updates. This is why all of CC needs to read Watchdog! Thank you, everyone

Eric Fehrmann's avatar

It sure looks like the commissioners are loading the agenda for the Feb. 24th meeting, leaving no time left for a forum. How much time will be spent on Community Development presentation? Public engagement? Mike French is the chair and should be the controlling agent in time management. Could this be part of a campaign plan?

Sent today:

Mike

As the chair of county commissioner meetings, is it possible to plan an agenda for these meetings, taking place when Commissioner Forums are on the agenda,  to  allow for enough time to actually hear from constituents?

It’s understandable that the peninsula is a draw for outsiders to cash in on. It’s beautiful here, but the beauty of this place is its remoteness. Unfortunately herds of tourists come every year and with that come opportunist. Our elected representatives should be working on our behalf ensuring growth makes sense and keeps money local, not lining the pockets of Chinese investors. It seems like a pattern the commissioners work to help themselves and special interest groups. I’m so glad people are waking up!

John Worthington's avatar

We can't cut timber now because of the "damage" to the park and "tourism". The park that had a "sanitation limit" with tourists from 8 different cultures cussing in 9 different languages because they could not access Hurricane ridge...I feel sorry for those folks because I doubt any of their cultures know how to sing 99 bottles of beer on the wall or the cow kicked Nelly in the belly in then barn for the three hours it takes to go 70 miles to get here..

Evrita Romero's avatar

Ha ha ha your comment made my day!

All I see when I look at those exterior windows/mirrors are bird strikes, not to mention the ground-light disturbances to migrating species. Maybe it's time for the Olympic Peninsula Audubon Society and the tribes that partner with them to put their money where their mouths are on this one.

Jennifer's avatar

Chasing Dirt, if fish could fly the Tribe would get a grant and wade in on this one but....no monee, no washee

Good morning Jeff,

Thank you Heather, go Doggers!

Luanne Hinkle is another sell out to this county wr love. It's quite a shame Mark Ozias, Mike French , and sadly Randy Johnson are of the same ilk. We are approaching a real tipping point and those who ignore the public sentiment must be sent away to China or any Global system country of our choice!

Mirror house in the wild...Mark will want one in the Dungeness park!

The Park is the line in the sand and they shall not cross!

Thanks Jeff and have a great day all...

We see that the full names aren't provided on the flyer..why is that? Add the additional misstatements and the red flags are everywhere.

I don't trust a single word or statement that these developers speak. Sorry, I have business/professional experience with people like we're seeing here and it has nothing to do with truth, just enough bullshit to get their way. No ethics, just talk shit.

mike cameron's avatar

Obviously, these people are totally unaware of what happens so often to unattended properties of any kind on the West End. They become targets for recreational shooters and recreational burglars! I doesn't matter if it's a valuable piece of machinery, or a building left unattended! These Mirrored idiotic looking structures, would likely get shot to pieces, which would probably make most of the area residents, very happy, albeit quietly! These type of structures have no business in or around the West End or National Park areas, which makes it very easy to conclude, it's a plan born of idiots!

Robert James's avatar

'Free Market' (not) Capitalistic idiots!🤪

Sheldon McGuire's avatar

I hope people are waking up. Making noise, citing facts, requiring details, all contribute to truth. We folks in the Northwest have many treasures. As others seek to steal those treasures we must be on guard. Caution is the word.

Denise Lapio's avatar

Yep. There will always be someone who wants what you have.

Robert James's avatar

God only knows how true that is...I've been studying ancient history and NOTHING has changed in thousands and thousands of Earth Years!

There has to be something better than this and I'm pretty sure what it is...The Way Out is a consciousness thing!😊

Robert James's avatar

Rattle the cage... and break it when necessary!😎

Brandy's avatar

This is a prime example of why we still feel hopeful, despite being LEGITIMATELY disenfranchised by the leaders we've elected. The people are waking up, paying attention, and organizing. I can see why the commissioners -- after a lively and robust public comment period -- privately referred to the public as "scary". Quite honestly, if I was receiving a robust taxpayer-funded salary and my sole job was to represent the taxpayer, yet I continually chose to do the opposite, I'd feel a bit scared too. Pretty logical reaction when your boss looks in you the eyes and asks you, "why aren't you doing your job?" Like another commenter recently stated, you cannot serve two masters.

Heather's avatar

Unfortunately the commissioners were too busy to attend the hearing, so not even our representative Mike French was there.

But, the county staff was there, and he was visibly shook by our testimony. I was left with the impression that Enrique is honestly trying very hard to serve the people and our interests, but has been handed an impossible job to defend against an aggressive virus. My goal is to inspire county staff to wield their powers for the common good, and when they feel overwhelmed, to reach out.

Mimi Smith-Dvorak's avatar

Please add the words "so called" before representative whenever referring to Mr. French.

Mimi Smith-Dvorak's avatar

because he is only a "so-called" representative, because he is rather selective in who and what he represents.

Robert James's avatar

Disrespecting corrupt 'authority' is a time honored tradition, for whatever it's worth!🤓

Robert James's avatar

kommissar works, as well!😱

MK's avatar

How odd that Commissioner French didn't show up.

Robert James's avatar

kommissars don't have to 'show up'...they are 'party insiders', exempt from normal discourse and engagement! They 'rule'...that's why they have to GO!😊

The decision maker on the permit is a hearings examiner. She appeared by zoom, and is not local. The only people in the room besides the neighbors were two county staff, Luanne, her general contractor, Jake Seegers and Paula Hunt, the PDN reporter. I had called her ahead of time and she's interested in the story.

Afterwards, I told her I was surprised that none of the commissioners were there. She said she's covered permit and zoning hearings for years and no commissioners have ever attended the hearings because they always have so many meetings.

Jennifer's avatar

Heather, your statement,... "Unfortunately the commissioners were too busy to attend the hearing, so not even our representative Mike French was there"... kinda sums it up. The Clallam County Commissioners have an agenda that doesn't involve taking the pulse of local citizens....Not one Commissioner hits the streets, talks or interviews the businesses or homeowners or the homeless, they hit and miss their meetings or pay attention when they are there.

Heather's avatar

I will say that I feel I know Mike French pretty well and feel that he does regularly attend the West End Business and Professional Association Meeting and is regularly at Forks Chamber of Commerce Presentations. He regularly goes to breakfast at the Inn Place, and I have been able to have breakfast with him and discuss issues that are important to me.

I will also say that he is the one who invited Luanne to the WEBPA meeting. I was under the impression that she only came to give the presentation because he asked her too. However, there was no public notice of the meeting or the development to anyone in Forks. WEBPA happens regularly every Wednesday at 7:30 am, there is no agenda, the members all simply give updates. They showed up unannounced after a facebook post had spurred a few people to write to the county.

So, while French did ask Luanne to come to WEBPA, I still felt completely blindsided by the whole process.

AI based on my recollection:

Clallam County commissioners have expressed symbolic and public support for dark skies, though some local advocacy groups argue their policy actions have been inconsistent.

Key Indicators of Support

- Official Proclamations: In April 2025, the Board of County Commissioners officially recognized International Dark Sky Week. Commissioner Mike French notably read the proclamation aloud, highlighting the importance of protecting migratory birds and encouraging responsible outdoor lighting.

- Legislative Engagement: The commissioners are currently updating the 2025 Comprehensive Plan. The local advocacy group, DarkSky Olympic Peninsula, has formally petitioned the board to include enhanced outdoor lighting requirements in this update to reduce light pollution county-wide.

- Existing Codes: The county already has some lighting regulations (CCC 33.53.100) that require new outdoor and security lighting to be shielded and directed downward to prevent glare and light trespass

This is the result of the BOCC action reducing and still ignoring short term rental regs and residency requirements so, as they explained, the county residents can make some money and acquire affordable housing really looks like.
