The Sovereign Nation Treaty separates the Jamestown S'Kallam tribe as a "separate entity." The same rules that apply to - the rest of us - on the Olympic Peninsula to not apply to them. I understand the historical reasoning for the "Separate Nation Status," but how come the Clallum County Commissioners are squeezing the rest of us with high property taxes, high fees for other activities while the "Tribe" enjoys "tax free" activities & income? We other citizens are not being treated as "equals" ...and certainly do not enjoy "equity!"
This sounds eerily similar to another article that brought up their ancestral whale hunts- the irony being the removal of anything ancestral about them. I don’t recall ever reading about ancestral tribal cultures utilizing motor boats or modern weaponry in time immemorial.. do you? The more loopholes there are to exploit, the more exploiting they’ll certainly do
Clearly there is a 'fairness' omission. Add up all the many many ways these "oppressed" people are not "paying their fair share" and you have money just waiting to support the 'right' politician in Clallam County.
The relationship with Native American tribes parallels our relationship with post-WW2 European countries. For decades they have gotten special treatment for being underprivileged.
But Europe has been able to stand on its own two feet for several years and no longer need the US to support it financially or militarily. Under Trump, many countries are beginning to ‘pay their fair share’. The same is true for the tribes. They have been allowed to fish without restrictions and build their casinos (which were illegal for any other business venture) and other businesses, and are now at least self-sufficient, even wealthy.
At what point can we stop dealing in the reparations and special treatment mindset that create the current inequities? What other nation has conquered other cultures and not assimilated them? We need to revisit the whole ‘sovereign nations within a sovereign nation’ subject.
There have been two sets of rules for a long time now. It is happening everywhere , especially in this state. If you are democrat certain rules don't apply. And thank you for pointing out just how corrupt Jamestown really is.
Tried to have a Republican campaign event in Carrie Blake park. Was told that the City of Sequim does not host political events. Was told that it would have to invite other political groups and make it an open event to be held.
As previously communicated to ________, fundraising for partisan groups is not permitted in any City facility. Unfortunately, this means that renting the Guy Cole Center or any other City facility for the purpose of raising funds to sustain your office is not an option.
Concerning last year's event organized by the Clallam County Democrats, they requested to rent the James Center Bandshell but were unable to do so in accordance with our guidelines. However, they chose an alternative approach by organizing a protected, expressive political rally in the park—an area considered a public space, so such events are constitutionally protected. To facilitate this, they obtained a Special Event Permit. Due to its protected status, we issued a waiver for the Special Event Permit fee.
Should your event take on a similar form, I would be more than happy to assist you through the Special Event Permit (SEP) application process. The application for SEPs can be found here, and I am available to assist you with any questions you may have.
So the request was for a fundraiser. I do remember we were able to have a political rally but I seem to remember some conversation as we would have to have it open to other groups / candidates. Don' have the emails for that.
I do not consider this an issue with Jamestown at all.
This is a Treaty issue. The treaty of point no point was signed by a bunch of white peoples who screwed over the local tribes and now you bitch about the “two sets of rules?” How grand. The repeated “ what aboutisms”in this article are
How did they “screw over the local tribes?” Did they demand tribute? Did they take everything from them? BTW, I believe they were paid $60,000. Might not seem like much, but if invested at 7%, would be almost 5 billion now.
Were reservations intended to be forever homes or a place where American Indians could learn the new ways, so we could all be in the same canoe paddling our hearts out together toward a “big beautiful” (I plagiarized) America?
Obviously you don’t know your history. The settlers came here, rounded up the Jamestown tribe and sent them to a reservation in Shelton with tribes they didn’t get along with at the time. The tribe WALKED back to Sequim from Shelton and pooled what little resources they had to buy a piece of land that ended up saving them. They are a story of resilience and hope. Go learn the history of the stolen land you live on instead of reading these bullshit blog posts by someone who is going through a mental health crisis.
The author of this blog post. They used to be a fun and loving individual who had positive thoughts of the tribe. In the last few years Jeff has changed a lot. Some even wonder if this is early onset dementia?
Jeff, I'm sorry the tribe pissed in your Cheerios. So today we're complaining that the tribe doesn't have to...pay more taxes for their once a year event.
For land that was stolen!? Yeah right!! NEVER GONNA HAPPEN! Get over it! Clearly your ancestors are not from here so if you don’t like it go back to your roots! Where your bloodline came from demand your freedoms there!
Gee, if that was the only accommodation granted to the tribes, it would clearly be one of no concern. “Pay more taxes”? What did I miss? It is as if you are saying they pay any taxes that the rest of us participate in. I’m not being snarky but clearly want to know what tax programs do the tribes contribute to, for the support of all people in this state?
I am in 100% support of the local tribe enjoying their cultural event as they please, especially if they don't foment cultural division and/or division against any other Americans in any way~! In fact, it would be best if they started emphasizing "community" and encouraging the coming together of all Americans from ALL cultures for the common good of America and all of the tribes within it~! Like most problems however, this issue of "government permits" it a deeply Constitutional one and it should have nothing to do with prejudicial preferences & privileges of any culture~! At first glance I believe that many people would fall for the "fear porn" that the government always insists upon terrorizing good folks with, that would drive many to assume that the only way these kinds of gatherings could or should be held is under strict government control and supervision. I call that atrocious & even criminally dominating behavior, especially in these days where it would be so simple for the government to cut their sick and disgusting bureaucratic paperwork crap that is obviously intended to choke the life and enjoyment out of good Americans (while the same government is insisting upon being paid richly for folks to remain in the governments "good graces"). The government already gets paid richly for their efforts and that should include ALL lawful & peaceful activities that any healthy community should need and desire! Food services, necessary public facilities like bathrooms, and general crowd planning & control for any such event is generally handled very well by organizers of these kinds of gatherings without the dominating oversight of government sticking its big nose into everything~! Yes, "we" have all been shocked by the realization that there are a LOT of people within our society who have less than the common sense and Intelligence that would have previously been assumed just 6 years or so ago, so sadly the government needs to make at least some efforts to guide people who are organizing larger events such as this. Why can't the local government provide a simple list of "recommended guidelines" to folks who want to hold these larger events, instead of this list of punitive and costly demands that are actually unnecessarily redundant in most cases. Food services already have strict guidelines and licensing requirements. The tribe must or should have insurance policies for ALL operations, especially on their lands and facilities. The tribe already has "security" services and can task them to deal with such events and work with the local police that are already abundantly paid to do their jobs. Port-a-potties can readily be installed where need be. The tribe needs to see that the garbage, trash, and litter from this gathering is well taken care of, but what is the big deal for competent folks of reasonable Intelligence to handle these few simple matters? I know this specific location very well, so I am FAR more concerned by the disruption of all of the property owners & residents' lives in the area that will obviously be very unpleasant for them~! I am greatly impressed by the immediate neighbor's respectful willingness to tolerate such a terribly disruptive event, so that absolutely proves just how the good folks here in the community are more than willing to get along and that this BS about ongoing systemic racism is a COMPLETE lie and deception of very evil people and criminally corrupt governments~! Lastly, if I owned one of the shoreline properties that the tribe is asking to be able to use for this event, I would be tempted to forbid it because of the criminally underhanded backstabbing of this very same tribal government in its efforts to steal properties from my neighbors to the West at Three Crab's, HOWEVER, I would like to think that I would choose to allow the TEMPORARY trespass in the spirit of community and positive relations~! Of course, I would also absolutely require that the tribe indemnify my property and myself from any and all potential losses and liability that could result from strangers temporarily using my beach for such an event, but hopefully all of the good folks who do open up their properties for this are wise enough to make sure that they, and their insurance companies, are not on the hook for any potential losses or legal claims~! I seriously doubt that any insurance company that carried a typical homeowner's policy would honor any claim where the insured opted to "host" (or allow) such an additional unexpected and unanticipated use of the subject property, so that of course likely leaves the property owner strictly liable and 100% responsible for any and all problems that could arise by allowing strangers to trespass in this manner... Be careful, think things out well, and stay safe~! Enjoy this event and use it for bringing ALL Americans together~! Sincerely, Mike
This topic has been repeatedly addressed. When does the blood line end? An update on Native News on Line
NATIVE NEWS ON LINE JUNE 11, 2025 Is blood quantum slowly erasing Native tribes? Host Levi Rickert sits down with Norbert Hill and Megan Hill to tackle the colonial policy that’s mathematically eliminating Indigenous communities — one generation at a time.
Drawing from their new book, Beyond Blood Quantum, the Hills examine how a 150-year old colonial weapon is still being used against Native people — often by their own tribes. The math is brutal: blood-quantum requirements mean some tribes could legally cease to exist within decades.
If we were allowed the free medical care like tribal members get (amongst the many many other freebies and allowances they get) a family member of mine wouldn't be facing foreclosure of his home due to devastating medically cost. Another member of the community who has paid his way for tribal robbery at the cost of his home.
BTW a procedure he needs cost over $3,000 at Olympic Medical Center compared to the same procedure in Portland Oregon that cost $308.00. How is this justified?
Free medical care? Are you talking about the IHS clinic on the westside of Port angeles? Because if you are a descendant of Jamestown, then you don't get to go to the fancy facility in sequim filled with white people. You go to the far westside of Port angeles to the Elwah IHS clinic that is always booked far out and where you still are gonna have to pay for certain medical things.
Our quantum is low on paper. It wasn't cool to be a native american back when our ancestors were being torn from thier families and sent to boarding houses. A large percent of natives who had any European decent rolled with that hard to avoid such things. The majority of jamestown you are left with are not many. And they don't speak for all of us. We still have to pay taxes and for medical coverage. We are still getting screwed like the rest of you
When is enough really enough? Do the signed treaties state that our generation and all that follow need to accommodate the Tribes forever? I think we all have empathy for the cruel history but I don’t find myself culpable for say WW1 or WW11 or Vietnam etc. I had zero input or participation. Citizens are being held hostage for people that claim their independence from US laws and regulation. It can’t be both ways. Be independent or part of the tax paying, voting population.
Whatever our thoughts are about the Jamestown tribe we might want to keep in mind whatever the white man did to them in the past that's not our fault plus let's count the cost of what it cost the members of the tribe and weigh that against the profit that they are now enjoying from the white man and divide that amount among the less that 300 tribal members? WOW are each one of them really rich? Or where is all of that money going?
No. Descendants still pay property tax. Still get taxed to fill a car with gasoline. Still pay tax at a grocery store. Still have to have medical insurance to cover what IHS will not cover. We do not receive checks in the mail like other tribes. The few who run Jamestown have thier own stuff locked down. And they are not sharing. Most true desendants were left out all together and do not condone what the whitest tribe in Washington has made of itself.
I hope they are rich.... Although, I didn't personally take land and natural resources from them, OK maybe some snagged fish and those gummies I found in the parking lot, the wealth accumulated by my ancestors that did take it has allowed me to live a very nice life. Ironically, I've sold some land back at inflated prices. I ate the fish and the dope. Don't most strive to take every legal advantage to prosper as they have? Nothing is ever completely fair in our world. If you want them to change, work on the process not the people. I wish the Tribe the best beach party ever.
You and I were both born in a country, the United States of America, not by choice, and are both then natives. I am assuming you are of “tribal” heritage. If I am assuming wrongly, please inform. My heritage is mostly Austrian and German. Some pleasing and some not pleasing traditions, as with you. Continuing to celebrate the pleasing traditions, like St. Nicholaus, seems right for both of us. I think you would agree that continuing the holocaust would not be acceptable to either of us. So as a native-born citizen of the U.S. should we not both enjoy the same freedoms, and share the same responsibilities?
BOHICA is the term that seems applicable here. Tribes get the red carpet treatment while tax paying citizens have to bend over, fork over, and roll over.
I do not consider this an issue with Jamestown at all... this is a state issue. I say make it free for everyone. I'm tired of being taxed to death.
The Sovereign Nation Treaty separates the Jamestown S'Kallam tribe as a "separate entity." The same rules that apply to - the rest of us - on the Olympic Peninsula to not apply to them. Cuz your culture isn't considered 'culture'. Erasing you and your history.
My Glock 40 says that is not fair!!!

It’s turned out that reparations and special treatment are their inherited culture. Is that what they want added to school curriculum ?
Excellent point…
...one nation, under God...

Jeff, I'm sorry the tribe pissed in your Cheerios. So today we're complaining that the tribe doesn't have to...pay more taxes for their once a year event.
Wow.
They DON'T PAY TAXES AT ALL! Who shit into your Fruit Loops?
They are a sovereign government
Which should now end.
Well... I'm not sure what to say to that. Why should it end now?
Maybe you should read the article. I believe that ALL native tribes across the nation should start paying taxes on revenue.
For land that was stolen!? Yeah right!! NEVER GONNA HAPPEN! Get over it! Clearly your ancestors are not from here so if you don’t like it go back to your roots! Where your bloodline came from demand your freedoms there!
