The American Anthropological Association (AAA) officially paused land acknowledgments, as well as conference blessing ceremonies. The Association for Indigenous Anthropologists (AIA) advocated for this pause. AIA leadership has long referred to conference blessings and land acknowledgments as “conscience-clearing rites.” Infotainment blessings and vapid proclamations at the beginning of conferences and empty statements at the end of emails are often perceived by Indigenous people as insults. Not only are such performances often embedded with self-congratulatory messages but they also come laced with non-Indigenous expectations that the Indigenous people whom they implicate will respond with gratitude and appreciation merely for being rendered visible.

Rita, it appears the AAA pause on land acknowledgments was to strengthen the language. Since then Trump DEI rules have changed the language. Land acknowledgments are evolving and IMO should be removed altogether.

UA changes language in land acknowledgment after Trump DEI rules

KJZZ | By Alysa Horton/Cronkite News

Arizona universities are unsure of the future of inclusive initiatives as both the Trump administration and state Legislature threaten funding over diversity, equity and inclusion practices.

The University of Arizona quietly removed DEI language in its land acknowledgement to comply with a Jan. 20 executive order from President Donald Trump, which says government agencies must terminate all DEI “actions, initiatives, or programs” or face federal funding cuts.

That’s a misreading of what actually happened. The AAA didn’t reject land acknowledgments, they paused them to make them meaningful. The AIA wasn’t opposing respect for Indigenous peoples; they were opposing hollow gestures.

Their message was simple: stop performing, start committing. It wasn’t a rejection of acknowledgment, it was a demand for sincerity.

It’s hard to not be “hollow” when back stabbing is inevitable.

Fake tolerance for peaceful discourse has its place. Look, it’s been used and is being used every where, constantly.

Hi Eric & CCWD,

Today, my heart whelped.

The wording in this proclamation is nothing less than hypocritic divisive racism at its finest.

It would appear the 3 commissioners can LIBERALLY Authentically speak for the Entirety of Clallam County? (Where is RANDY?)

No, they can not speak for me.

I will not TOLERATE NOR will I ACCEPT this decree.

"Whereas Clallam County recognizes....."

"Whereas the county values the many contributions..."

"Whereas Clallam County recognizes that systemic racism...."

"Whereas Clallam County joins a growing number..."

To Promote Tolerance.

I will not TOLERATE bad behavior or injustice.

This is not justifiable behavior.

It is divisive.

We are being raped and stripped as law abiding citizens.

I am Clallam County.

You are Clallam County.

Say the pledge of Allegiance.

Now say it again.

How can the four of them swear hand over heart to God, to themselves and to ALL of US, their Allegiance for Liberty and Justice for All??

This bullshit grouping of words makes me ill. There is no healing fostered by these statements. In fact quite the opposite. I read this and am angered. It triggers an alarm in me that lets me know the tribe views me as adversarial. Therefore I need to be cautious. Same with the BLM supporters. I am reminded that these two groups don't see me as an individual. By virtue of my skin color now view me as an oppressor. Those words are inflammatory and can be a call to arms. Next thing you know, one of their soft headed sympathizers decides its time to become a martyr for the cause. Stupid rhetoric like this puts my head on a swivel. Identity politics in full view.

Another shaming is the Land Acknowledgment (see below) It has been incorporated in NGO’s, Community sponsored affairs, events , government meetings and more! The world and land came about long before man. The world came about in TIME IMMEMORIAL. Native Americans did not create the land. And have no right to tell us we need to express gratitude to them for “...TERRITORY YOU RESIDE ON” and to put us in our place by telling us we need to “...understand YOUR PLACE WITHIN THAT HISTORY”. It is an entitled attitude. The Land Acknowledgment only belongs to God.

In the Oct Tribal Newsletter, I read this statement by Tribal Candidate: Member At-Large Incumbent – Dana Ward “I am honored to attend and ACCEPT Land Acknowledgment on BEHALF of the S’KALLAM people at LOCAL EVENTS in Clallam and Jefferson County…” THIS IS Arrogance with a capital A!

WHAT IS A LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT?

“A Land Acknowledgment is a formal statement that recognizes the unique and enduring relationship that exists between Indigenous Peoples and THEIR traditional territories”

“To recognize the land is an expression of gratitude and appreciation to those whose TERRITORY YOU RESIDE ON, and a way of honoring the Indigenous people who have been living and working on the land from TIME IMMEMORIAL. It is important to understand the long standing history that has BROUGHT YOU TO RESIDE on the land, and to seek to understand YOUR PLACE WITHIN THAT HISTORY”

Will we be hearing a new version of the Arlo Guthrie song?

This land is NOT your land This land is OUR land

From California to the New York island;

From the red wood forest to the Gulf Stream waters

This land was NOT made for you JUST Me.

I am grateful to God for the land I have, and do not bend my knee to anyone else.

Green Seattle Partnership Land Acknowledgment

We acknowledge that the city of Seattle and its GREENSPACES are on STOLEN COAST SALISH LAND, specifically the ancestral land of the Duwamish, Suquamish, Stillaguamish, and Muckleshoot People. We recognize the STEWARDSHIP of Seattle’s greenspaces by the Coast Salish people since TIME IMMEMORIAL, the DISRUPTION of this work by COLONIZATION, and now endeavor to continue this work.

We make this acknowledgment to REMIND OURSELVES that, by being here today, we strive to REMEDY THIS INJUSTICE through our beliefs and actions in helping to steward our green spaces and communities in Seattle.

It drives me crazy to see “Time Immemorial “. Which means so far back nothing represents it. With the earth 4.5 billion years old and the Bering Land Bridge between 36,000-11,000 years before present, tribes do not have the designation of Time Immemorial. Closer to 12,000 -8,000 years. So get over it.

Until artifacts, fossils and such can prove Natives far exceeded known science the earth is not theirs alone, to inherit!

Whereas we have the Point No Point Treaty of 1855.

Whereas according to AI estimates, we have funded the BIA a Total Rough Estimate of $7–12 billion nominal since 1855, dominated by post-1970 BIA/grants (~80%).

Whereas this excludes gaming revenue ($1.5B/year recently, self-generated) and state payments (~$100M/year via Centennial Accord).

Whereas SERN and NODC have illegally diverted federal grant funds intended for no-tribal purposes to renegotiate the Point No Point Treaty of 1855 to acquire additional revenue using a "compensation mechanism" to "heal a broken relationship.

Whereas local taxpayers have helped provide trillions of dollars to the local tribes in this "bad relationship;

NOW, THEREFORE, we, the citizens of Clallam County, proclaim our belief that unity, fairness, and shared responsibility have not been provided to the people. We call on our elected leaders to pursue fiscal responsibility, transparency, and respect for all taxpayers, who have been screwed so bad that have had to use Reparation H.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, we dedicate this day to the residents of Clallam County—those who keep using Reparation H, to provide relief from illegal treaty negotiations and federal grant fraud.

NO one showed up to honor or receive it?

Perhaps they are not requesting it.

I personally bear no guilt for what happened 400 or 20 years ago to indiginous people. My taxes should not be raised to accomodate a select group of their decendents. Equal should mean just that.

the Suquamish and Chimakum had reached the point where the Suquamish decided to launch a "war of extermination" as soon as some immediate provocation was offered... The Suquamish under Chief Seattle were assisted by about 150 Klallam warriors... Women and children were captured and taken away as slaves. The Suquamish paddled away, leaving the last Chimakum village in ruins and nearly all of the people either dead or captured.
