In our other life, we had these annual sit downs to evaluate the employees performance, matched with job expectations from the job’s duty statement. I wondered about the Oppelts as well. I recall Jacob having strong support and his withdrawal really effed the council’s chances. Not that it would’ve been and different, but I am still holding a grudge. It just seemed too… convenient.

If I didn't know any better, and I don't, I would swear that Amy Miller was his political writer. I met her years ago at WorkSource and her talking points were almost identical to his spiel about housing the homeless (or unhoused) and ensuring that they have all the 'necessary' creature comforts with none of the responsibilities or accountability. Here he is, promising the sun, the moon, and the stars....once again...with negligible results. That's the hallmark of Socialist agendas and I can just about hear Oprah screaming "you get a car, you get a car, you get a car" without adding "you pay the taxes on it and you've got to find a way to get it home". The only thing we get in life for free is air, and that's only because no one's figured out how to monitor our breathing 24/7.
Mike means well, and I believe he genuinely wants a more vibrant economic future for Port Angeles and Clallam County. Where I differ is that his focus often seems to be on policy changes, programs and government investment rather than on measuring whether those efforts are actually producing better economic outcomes.
I see a similar mindset at the state level, where securing another grant—or even a grant to hire more people to pursue more grants—is often treated as economic development. Grants can absolutely be useful tools, but they are not, by themselves, a sustainable economic strategy.
I wish more elected officials would manage economic development around measurable outcomes: set short-, medium- and long-term goals, track them consistently, compare our performance with similar communities, and have the humility to acknowledge when a strategy isn't working.
We have plenty of data to do this. Sales tax collections provide a useful monthly barometer of economic activity. We can track building permits and housing production, lodging-tax collections, employment, wages, population growth, private investment and other indicators. Yet I rarely hear our City Council or County Commissioners publicly digging into these numbers, questioning the trends, or benchmarking Port Angeles and Clallam County against other older, rural and tourism-oriented communities.
Good intentions and good policies matter. But ultimately, government should be judged by outcomes. Are we creating more good-paying jobs? Are wages growing and outpacing inflation? Are we attracting private investment? Are we building enough housing for ALL levels of income? Is our tax base becoming stronger and more diversified? And most importantly: are we doing better than we were three, five or ten years ago—and better than comparable communities facing many of the same challenges?
Those are the questions I would like to hear our elected officials asking much more often.
When they are asked about creating a job friendly economic environment, they say it's not their job, then turn around and create jobs using grant (tax) money to pay for them. Mike French believes in the Modern Economic Theory, the government can print unlimited amounts of money. Maybe he should have spent some time learning the history of economies that collapsed under this belief.
We are reaching a breaking point. Does anyone remember the Laffer Curve from Economics 101?
Taxes don't exist in a vacuum. Higher taxes and fees eventually change behavior—discouraging investment, making housing harder to build and weakening the tax base itself.
But the other side of the equation is spending. Government spending without clearly defined, outcome-based goals—or any measurement of the return on that investment—too easily becomes permanent spending that requires ever-higher taxation to sustain it.
I fear Washington and Clallam County are caught in that cycle. We shouldn't measure success by dollars spent, grants received or programs created. Measure the economic outcomes: Are jobs and wages growing? Are we attracting private investment? Are we building housing? Is the tax base expanding?
If spending and taxes keep rising while those outcomes don't improve, we need to have the humility to admit the strategy isn't working.
The radical incompetent elected taxaholics do not care about others they just want their insane policies -agendas with high taxes,they will vote for high cost of living increases to make sure they do not suffer from their own bad actions.
I am old enough to remember the Laffer Curve. Just because you want to raise the marginal tax rate doesn't mean an equivalent increase in revenue will follow. In fact, the opposite might happen. But let's tax the bejesus out of millionaires and billionaires. They won't change their behavior. /sarc
Meanwhile, at the Federal level, despite record tax revenue, another $2 trillion was added so far just this year to the national debt for a total of $38 trillion. Neither party is talking about the debt or proposing a balanced budget. The Feds can always print money (sell bonds) to make up the shortfall. At least until the bond market balks. States and Counties have to have a balanced budget, so when they dream up new programs they have to raise taxes somewhere to fund them. And here we are. Welcome to Washington and to Clallam County.

In today's Board of Commissioners vouchers there is a Recompete voucher for $920.00 for catering expenses. Over $300.00 dollars in fuel for Molly Pringle and Carolyn Edge, French's admin hires. Recompete pays big city salaries and then celebrates the outstanding work being done.

He has made numerous mistake after mistake which has compounded job loss and business failure in CC. Can he actually account for ONE thing that HE has done to make CC more prosperous? I have no homelessness, less crime, don't have to deal with wacko activist players with egos bigger than IQ.
