The issue is the documented record of Health Officer Allison Berry’s past statements. In 2006, on a LiveJournal under the handle pudlsplashr, she wrote that she would shoot George Bush in his sleep.
The same posts include a fantasy about secretly sterilizing her younger brother and other extreme political statements. Full archival of Berry’s statement can be found in an article by the Grim Reporter.
French chairs the Board of Health that oversees her. For years he publicly demanded clear condemnation of political violence and insisted that people be judged by what they say out loud. He applied that standard without hesitation to the President.
In October 2018, he posted this after attempted bombings targeting Democratic figures:
On June 9, 2020, he reacted to a Trump tweet about the Buffalo protester this way:
Later that year, he shared the Atlantic piece claiming Trump called war dead “losers” and “suckers,” arguing the public record already showed who the President was:
On January 6, 2021, he described events in Washington as “violent armed vigilantes” storming the capital:
Those are Mike French’s words. He said political violence is terrorism, that leaders must state clearly it is unacceptable, and that people who say outrageous things out loud should be believed.
The same standard has not been applied to Berry’s threat to shoot a sitting president in his sleep. The Board has not placed her professionalism on the agenda. Ask French tomorrow whether the rules he wrote and posted for years apply to the Health Officer he supervises. Consistency requires an answer.
