Tick? I'm just pointing out that comparing a gay man to a man who was famously anti-LGBT and openly celebrated the deaths of gay men may not be appreciated.
Wow, I’m so disappointed that my conspiracy thinking continues to be proven right. How hard is it to have actual reporting that isn’t swayed by ad dollars? Truthful news is interesting as are the local and diverse people. Why can’t that be the goal for journalism?
If printed news continues with paid-for narratives, they will become just more junk history.
As readers, we don’t have to take that. My opinion, both publications have had shallow information ponds for years.
Just cancel your subscription. I did. And I still get access to the PDN and SG online for free.
I use DuckDuckGo, type in Sequim Gazette or Peninsula Daily into browser search. Presto! I scroll down to see if anything warrants my attention. Usually, no.
If you do read something, you'll get two pop-ups (one's a paywall) and you are blocked from opening another story. Easy fix: click on the DDG flame icon, which burns the cookies cache, type in the name of the paper again. Rinse and repeat. Damned if I'll pay one cent for laziness and bias.
You know what really flusters online publications? When you don't click on the ads. Click-throughs are the only solid proof that an online ad has done its job.
So, cancel your subscription. Fewer subs equates to weaker market penetration. The weaker the market penetration, the less inclined advertisers will be to drop money into big ads.
Newspapers aren't like other businesses. They're unique, with a unique responsibility. The PDN and SG are failing to uphold that responsibility, to wit, the readers always, always come first.
I divested myself of PDN about three years ago. I have since been plagued by unending marketing calls with discounts and other "offers" to subscribe to PDN. I repeatedly must explain that the money has nothing to do with my not wanting PDN. It is the liberal bent of the publisher that tells me I cannot believe their news. Much like main stream media, another news for sale whore.
It's interesting the disparity in reporting by a volunteer vs paid business. In a small town I can only imagine how hard it would be to run a for-profit business (media) and be able to steer clear of the mine fields of relationships. It's all a recipe for a "Quid Pro Quo" city. It's the only way people will talk to the media, especially elected officials. Look at the lack of response Jeff gets because he isn't beholden to the murk.
At the height of it though was when Ozias mentioned using taxpayer money to support local media. That he has the stones to even utter those words from his public pulpit should concern everyone.
Easy enough to defeat in court. In fact, the SCOTUS has already heard and ruled on what would be a similar case: Entities may not extract money from a citizen for speech that the citizen disagrees with. It's a blatant violation of the First Amendment.
M ozias has a history of making undesirable decisions since being elected,he acts like a elected radical from the big cities making horrible decisions that are not expected from the voters.P.A. is in trouble with these radical commissioners making bad decisions. We need to get rid of them ASAP.I know jeff tozzer is keeping track of most of these bad decisions by reading them in his watchdog forum and this information will be helpful to keep the voters informed. At some point i would like to get a summary of the commissioners bad decisions and i will make a bunch of copies to hand out to other voters.Years commissioners voted in French 2022,Ozias 2023,Johnson 2024 elections coming up shortly for two bad apples.
We subscribe to the PDN strictly for the crossword puzzle. They were bad enough when they were affiliated with the AP, now that they are affiliated with the NYT, they have become an editorial page for the left. As far as local coverage goes, we’re never going to see anything but positive spin for local government. Some watchdog we have there. Lapdog, maybe.
Just search for "crossword puzzles free online" and you can save your dime. I get WSJ Daily crossword for free and with online crosswords are easier to erase wrong entries.
The PDN has the LA Times crossword seven days a week and the NYT puzzle once a week. I usually don’t work the NYT puzzle because it’s riddled with clues on subjects that I neither know or care about. The names of symphony conductors or Best Picture of 1977 Oscar winners or 22 year old Grammy winners are not in the least interesting to me. Perhaps for East Coast sophisticates or California posers but I’ll pass, thanks.
Citizen journalists like this substack is the new way forward. I no longer watch network news. Just don’t need to when you can go on You Tube, Rumble or X and have dozens of Podcaster’s give you todays topics often in real time.
Shout out to Brandi Kruze for her podcast on Washington Politics.
The only problem I have with Brandi Kruze is that she is (or was) Anti-Trump, which is a non-starter for me. Anyone who does not see that Trump is working for OUR interests-- the working middle class people, not lobbyists, not the "party", but for us taxpayers, is an idiot, in my mind. Yeah, I don't like his NYC bluster (though it can be entertaining at times), nor his self-promotion, but those are small potatoes compared with what he is doing for US, The PEOPLE.
I think Brandi is working hard to build a good product. ( her journalism) I respect her for walking away from her job at Fox over her desire to produce something more than 3 minute sound bites. As far as Trump… the Stable Genius quote was classic and still makes me laugh out loud for what it did to the press and it’s impossible for me to see a clip of Hillary without thinking there goes “Old Crooked”.
At a state and Federal level, Diane Gruber from Pacific County is knocking it out of the park. She reported on their successful bid to recall one of their county commissioners.
It's the "actions have consequences" rule that so many of these organizations that believe if you bend the knee to the politcal 'man' you've made the best decision.
The 'consequences' are simple. You've lost the trust of the 'people'. It's the 'people' who support your rags.
Jeff has proven he is the voice of the 'people' and they are the puppets of the Commissioners.
Goes without saying….10 years ago, oh hell no! Not one stinking dime for leftist garbage. Instead if I need to read with my own eyes the garbage there are ways to obtain a free publication…..NOT ONE DIME! It is just an injustice, so one sided, it’s not democracy.
I have wondered how either of these newspapers have survived. The number of pages has declined so drastically that advertising dollars has to be the only thing keeping them afloat. When your life is at risk you might resort to CPR from questionable sources. Just sayin'.
I still have a subscription and I still read books.I like to turn pages I guess.Although I can understand the position they are in.Years past, the letters to the editor could be a page full of people’s opinions, complaints etc. No more. I miss George Rains. Along came a white knight.Thank you Jeff Tozzer.
I miss the late Adele Ferguson and the late George Gay, two columnists from the state who I doubt either newspaper would have the courage to publish today.
Advertising is the lifeblood of a newspaper. Subscriptions help cover the cost for printing and distribution. Subs alone at reasonable rates would never make a profit.
Reporters have their own biases. The Tick will be along any moment to remind us of Jeff's, but not address the elephant in the room.
Take for example the recent Sequim School District measures. I'm sure the reporter who wrote the generic bland regurgitation article of propaganda the Sequim School District wanted everyone to believe is a good person. But what if this reporter has a child in that same school system and is a supporter of the measures? Would it be prudent to state the conflict at the introduction? Might it explain the lack of covering the anti position?
Most YouTubers doing a product review clearly call out that they aren't being paid to review the product, or that the manufacturer has any input on the creation of the video. An amazing feat by just someone pumping out content. Why can't our local media be as professional?
Spot on article. The local papers are bought and paid for by Jamestown tribe, Olympic Medical Center and other businesses. They a consistent abount of paid ads.....Quid qo pro....never get any significant bad press of investigative journal articles exposing any sort of corruption, waste or fraud related to them. Disgusting. This in analagous to the corruption seen in our local, state and federal government. They are supposed to hold these entities accountable....instead they cheer them on. WTF!
If you listened in on the 24th LD Democrats townhall last night, or have heard this one person who continues to demand the BOCC take a stand against Trump in the open forum comments portion of their meetings, you'd wonder how these same people don't see their own party's actions as being identical to what they despise.
Suddenly I'm in favor of more mental health funding for our county. It might reduce the insanity.
Just become a drug addict and you will get all the mental health care you need, plus daycare, showers, maybe a $350K apartment with dog wash & lounge…..if mental health was for everyone like we used to have then great…..but that sadly is not the case.
That dingus who stood up at the CC meeting was unbelievable… I looked at Ozias he looked at me when I gave him the “omg unbelievable eye roll” the whole suit of CC’s is unbelievable!
If Jeff starts a REAL newspaper, the small businesses will pay to advertise because the advertising rates will be a lot lower than what the Propaganda Daily Nonsense and Sequim Garbage charge their hi-falutin' customers, while Jeff will cater to the REAL PEOPLE that need to know who is screwing them and how.
It's been clear to me for some time that the PDN and SG are putting profits ahead of the people's right to know.
The publisher of the PDN and SG, Eran Kennedy, is not a journalist. She was a regional advertising director for Sound Publishing before being promoted to group publisher in mid-2023.
This is Sound Publishing's pattern. I saw it in early 2000 as editor of the Federal Way Mirror. My publisher, a journalist, resigned. His successor, who hadn't been at the Mirror all that long, was the advertising manager. I Ieft soon after to take a managing editor position at a small daily.
Sound Publishing's modus operandi is to give readers a lot of happy-slappy filler, apart from crime stories, while trying to avoid controversy and confrontation that might piss off advertisers. Again, not journalism. It's putting profits ahead of the people's right to know.
Kennedy is likely gate-keeping important stories that might upset advertisers. That's not journalism, it's propaganda by omission. By turning over space in the SG last spring to the local school superintendent, Kennedy made it clear that she'll use the PDN and SG as house organs for local governnent. That again is not journalism.
Ozias’ background working for the Food Bank he and the bully were publishing their brand….so I would think they have much in common with PDN & Gazette in their ways of doing their influential business dealings. Although not having a very stable employment background landing a $100+K government job must be like falling into a gold mine able to push other people’s money into NGO’s instead of supporting the very failing business community in which he used to work is much easier & provides for a good income too. When they retire or lose their main source of income it’s going to be an awakening of the damage he has done to this county. I don’t know about other taxpayers but I’ve not seen any improvement for almost 10 years, infact quite the opposite…..and who has been at the helm?
Even worse, the PDN runs press releases from Olympic Medical Center as if they were objective and professional journalism. Credit is given to the paper’s former executive editor. Of course, OMC is a longstanding advertiser.
Good question. People don't need an ad to remember where to have a baby or whom to call if they are having chest pains. I think it's like the mafia: they pay for protection.
That way, when they have a rogue doctor who allegedly sexually assaults several patients, the paper lightly reports on it but doesn't focus on the doctor's record in Florida, which should have waved a huge red flag for hiring managers at OMC.
When OMC makes business decisions that are running the hospital's finances into the ground, the hospital will run a levy, and the PDN will report that we may lose our facilities for childbirth and cancer treatment while never reporting how much came out of public pockets to settle with the doctor's alleged rape victims.
It's another way our county culture avoids accountability. I expect this to be a strong theme in Commissioner Ozias' columns.
Jeff wrote: "That way, when they have a rogue doctor who allegedly sexually assaults several patients, the paper lightly reports on it but doesn't focus on the doctor's record in Florida, which should have waved a huge red flag for hiring managers at OMC."
Exactly! That's how the game is played when concern for profits trumps the people's right to know.
How does Ozias have the time to participate in all the boards he’s on, groups or “other jobs” he has? No wonder is he missing a lot of Clallam County Commissioners meetings. How many meetings are they allowed to miss?
I see..... So OMC (probably non profit status gov subsidised) budget is being used keep their propaganda machine going. They have built a network of almost untraceable funding for themselves. Thank you for pointing this one out.
Rather than have a lot of cash on hand, they have banked a lot of it into vacant or almost vacant real estate that they’re not using in hopes of future purposes. We’ll see how long that lasts as the “seeking a partnership” process rolls down the road and due diligence takes place.
They have been setting up their system of diverting taxpayer money to fund their communist government for decades right under our noses. Washington is ahead of the curve. Its a melting pot of all the university brainwashed libtards from all over the country. Hopefully Trump and Elon can shut off the federal spigot. But we have to vote the in state policy makers out.
As you wrote above, Jeff, it's public relations and not journalism as to hiring the doctor then defending him. We should all cry over the demise of impartial journalism.
As I recall OMC has financial woes, paying for advertising seems like a financial burden. No cardiologist, no gynecologist…..but they can afford to pay for advertising?
No, they do have cardiologists. I think gynecology is part of Women’s Health and I wasn’t aware they didn’t have a provider. They don’t have a rheumatologist for all of us older people with arthritius — I know because I have to go out of the area to see mine. They’re losing a pulmonologist to Jefferson Healthcare shortly.
Friend has had to be air lifted twice in last couple of months because of no cardiologists to be able to perform here. knew about pulmonologist going to PT so patients will have to drive there & get referral to see same doctor different medical group. Our commissioners should be more concerned about better services. The walk in clinic decreased their hours due to lack of staff, they can work for the tribe at MAT for more money…..
I went there 2 years ago when I had a heart attack. I've worked as a nurse in an ER for 5 years and there are basic things that need to be done if ANY suspicions of a heart attack are present. None were done for me, they were more concerned I put on a face mask, than giving me an oxygen mask. I had to tell the nurses what was needed. The doctors in Silverdale couldn't get me out of there fast enough were standing in the door to take me to surgery. I was lucky to survive!
Then your friend was airlifted for other reasons because there are a number of cardiologists at OMC/OMP. They don’t have interventional cardiologists and that’s a major problem.
Local media is well past the cross roads. PDN and the Gazette collected their 30 pieces of silver a long time ago. There is no hope of restoration. There is no hope of either of them being any more informative or useful than the "weekly shopper". I recall a recent conversation in which somebody said: "I read in the Gazette." Another person responded: "You mean somebody actually still reads the Gazette." Somebody needs to withdraw the feeding tube.
Withdrawing the feeding tube is done first by cancelling subscriptions. If you know a business owner who advertises in either publucation, you might mention it to them and why.
Businesses need advertisement and unfortunately they happen to be the only option to push their wares…..it’s another very sad situation that they are the only options available……SAD & very detrimental as witnessed by the increased failure of this county to thrive.
For one, OMC can’t hold onto clinical staff and it’s constantly recruiting. Not just doctors who usually come from outside the area but medical assistants, many of whom come from the North Olympic Peninsula and are trained in-house. After a while they see what a circus it is and go work in nursing homes or private practice offices. Otherwise, I surmise that OMC needs to maintain an editorial presence via articles to assure residents and donors that they’re actually doing something to attract doctors, etc.
Wow free press? I think we have a TOWN CRIER IN CC WATCHDOG. Thanks Jeff and posters. I would be blissfully blind without you.
You're welcome. Lisa Bullyware told us to get on our soapboxes in the parking lot because we had no place in local government. And here we are.
I like the new nickname Jeff. People who get that upset and especially try to protect their husbands know that we’re getting under their skin
When people resort to immaturity to make their points, you can always count on me to get a little bit more immature :)
HA~! That is very funny Jeff~!
In my experience the vast majority of these low-level criminals of humanity and treasonous backstabbing scumbags know exactly what they are doing, how un-American, unconstitutional, and unlawful their actions really are, and they very Intentionally continue to destroy the fabric of society until they are stopped~! Only after lengthy court battles and when these scumbags have absolutely no other options remaining, do they sometimes confess their evil corrupt actions in a weak attempt to get lenient treatment. This disgusting ploy is all too familiar to those of us who have witnesses spoiled rotten children dominate and control their weak and incompetent parents in this sick "permissive society" of today... So, the only thing left to do is to reveal the sick games that these rotten clowns in our otherwise beautiful community are playing, and to speak to them on their own sick level as they are NEVER willing or capable of any commonsense exchange because that would instantly reveal their criminally evil intentions and dramatically destructive bad faith~! Cheers for your hard work~! Sincerely, Mike
Actually we are over the target!!! And windows are rattling….
Rim shot for Bullyware. Her and Eberllie's wife were the Towne Road Pointer sisters...:)
I loved their lyrics!
"I'm so excited, and I just can't hide it, I'm about to close this road and I think I like it."
"Jump, Jump, through these hoops (to get your road back)."
"He's so shy, he's so shy, that sweet little boy who let public engagement die."
Towne Road crier. :)
Local investigative journalism that counters the agenda setting local paper.
Feeding the local power hungry Nazgul's that see us as prey.

Rush "AIDS Update" Limbaugh? Might want to check in with Jeff before you make that comparison!
That's quite a nasty Tick bite you've got there.

BOYCOTT both papers.
Seriously, what does the Sequim Gazette charge for the rag out of a dispensary on the street? Ha!
I will NOT visit their wesite or buy the paper. Same with PDN!

That’s not related to the OMC situation.
Well if he's learning from Chapman we're in trouble.
As you wrote above, Jeff, it's public relations and not journalism as to hiring the doctor then defending him. We should all cry over the demise of impartial journalism.
Why does the PUD need to advertise...?
I know the answer to this one. It’s so the overhead justifies the increase rates to customers. Not mathematically of course, just in a rhetorical way.
The closest ENT is in Poulsbo. Bad news for anyone with ears, a nose, or a throat.
