The food bank confuses me. The line of cars stretches quite a ways around the corner and most if not all are sitting in cars and trucks newer and nicer than mine. I get it, things are expensive, but I feel like there is an epidemic of misplaced priorities among Americans.

If the Costco gas station was to offer free gas how many residents would Ozias claim are fuel challenged?

The metrics the food banks use as demonstrative of the problem they claim exists because of their own doing is a scam.

This confuses me as well. Another side of it is the free school breakfast and lunch programs in PA. The Food bank says 60% of the kids rely on this program! 60%.. Instead of, "Future Farmers of America", it's "Future Food Bankers of America" I guess.

The pressures of higher taxes, less services is at a tipping point as everyone has pointed out. When I see people wanting to move here, I wonder if they have done any research at all.

I can guarantee that not all those adults that take food at the foodbank and not all those kids that get free food from the school actually NEED it. But there is a prevailing attitude around here that if something is free people will do whatever it takes to get it. They don't care how it looks, they don't care how it affects others, and they sure don't care where the money comes from as long as they get their free stuff.

What confuses me is why this has become normalized and even glorified in some circles. And why we as taxpayers allow it, but like they say:

Taxes are a penalty for success, welfare is a reward for failure.

Free school lunch programs are heavily promoted nation wide. Many other grants for schools are tied in part to qualification for the federal free lunch program. As a school board member for a state funded charter school in (uber conservative, not handout friendly)Texas I was heavily encouraged to get as many students as possible signed up for free lunch because many other grants looked for that qualification. One important example would be the 21st Century Community Learning Center programs.

Anectdotally on the local level, upper middle class and above parents seem very conscientous regarding school lunch, meaning they rarely let their child get school lunch BECAUSE it is free for all and they feel wrong about using a free source they don't NEED. But try explaining that to a 5 yr old who just wants to eat the same lunch as their pals

A David Dewalt ( Maurice's incident) has been in Clallam jail twice recently, just released on 8/15.

Last Friday eve (8/15) on my way to exercise class in downtown PA after a full work work, transit security was speaking to a man rolling around on the ground at the transit center covered area. As I walked by keeping an eye on the scene the transit guard asked me how I was doing, I responded . I continued walking quickly and as I went down the stairs by the transit elevator heard male voices yelling behind me. Turned around at bottom of stairs and realized the male had jumped up and ran after me and the security guard was getting ahead of him to keep him from pursuing me. ran into the building and yelled for help as I pulled the door shut and guard had to work to get the male to leave.

Jump forward today searching for crimimal history of the David Dewalt in your story and I find this article, the photo is the same guy who tried to chase me! His hair is much more gray now but I am sure it's him. He has a looong history of crime and in this Redding, CA article police had arrested him 17 times that year. He is scary! I changed jackets, left through other side of the building and detoured by several blocks after class to avoid another encounter. these are the type of folks harm reduction and enabling draw to PA! check out his picture, imagine him with more gray hair, and stay far away from this volatile person. retail workers should not have to deal with him. https://krcrtv.com/archive/police-transient-arrested-17-times-since-last-year

Good luck with the burn permits, 'French-fried'! Good luck enforcing 30,000 incident calls of NON-COMPLIANCE! I personally would like more burn science and common sense applied to burning, such as neighborly awareness of smoke-drift and proper clearance zone around burn material, and people not burning asphalt shingles and plastic and other 'garbage', and tarping and drying brush piles before burning, and having pressured-water nearby when burning, and not picking the most beautiful days to burn...but 'whatcha gonna do? Dave Upthegrove's goals are to increase timber harvest through longer cutting cycles. Continuingly shorter cutting cycles beginning in the 1960's and most recently being pushed by hedge funds seeking short term profits, have decreased the amount of wood, and jobs, that Clallam County would otherwise be capable of producing. In addition, these shorter cutting cycles have a large negative effect on late summer stream flows, which the county is attempting to mitigate through fees called for by the Dungeness Water Rule, for which the forest industry pays none. Look a little deeper into the misinformation being spread by the forest industry and you will see how the east end of Clallam County, in particular, will benefit from Dave Upthegrove's policies (if he sticks to his campaign promises).

Large logs bring less money. I’m not quite sure exactly what the maximum optimum diameter is. I believe it’s @ 30”. I was harvesting timber off my property to gain usable acreage . Minimum was 16” diameter and I believe maximum was 30”. The “Timber Cruiser” I was talking to told me that the big stuff had to go to smaller more specialized mills that paid less per board foot. That the most profitable were sized for export. Now this may be b.s. but it’s how it was explained to me. I sold $60k worth of logs. This was in the early 2000’s.

The large logs only bring less money per board foot because most mills have been redone to handle smaller logs, the product of shorter cutting cycles. The larger logs certainly produce much higher quality lumber that should be intrinsically more valuable.

Mr. Richards, I must apologize for the rude comments, some people just can't help themselves.

The forest industry has certainly been attempting to develop faster growing trees but I think they have made little progress there. Planting trees in much thicker than sustainable stands causes faster early growth as the trees seek to out compete each other, but then most of the trees are wasted in pre-commercial thinning, as is the water that was used to grow those trees. What is notable here is that the harvests Upthegrove has delayed, and which the timber industry is clamoring to get its hands on, are 100 to 120 year old trees - certainly these are not the product of GMO. And it is these trees that grow more, better timber faster.

It's natural humanity at it's finest when things are offered for free with no questions asked! Morals often go out the window. I've seen the lineup of cars for the Sequim food bank and was shocked at the first time I saw it! My daily driver is an 06' with 230k miles on it. Many of the cars in that lineup were 2015's or newer. Now I know that we sometimes fall on hard times and it's nice to get a "handup" but some just keep going for freebies even though they are not in need.

Addressing the special groups issue....well as stated....all people should be treated equally. This special treatment needs to be toned way down and consequences need to come back. Most people understand consequences and will change their behavior habits accordingly. Some don't and those are the ones that need to be targeted with the special programs to help them. The rest will straighten their lives out after finding out that they have to be responsible for themselves.

Fairness and transparency are of the upmost importance in our county leadership whether it be a county seat, OMC leader or board member, or a facility that takes taxpayer's money. The biggest, best, or most liked (want lists) are not what gets the job done.

It's time for a change in Clallam County, time for new common sense leadership!
