Well it’s official. Clallam county government has become a danger to its own citizens. It is time for people to step up and take over. I just read an article about Huntington Beach CA and how 7 MAGA supporters got elected to the city council and they are enforcing all the laws and getting the homeless out of their city. It can be done.

Glad HB has woken up. I see this as a change of heart/policy from what was in HB.

The attribution to MAGA isn't in my book the necessary ingredient for what made it work, it's that elected officials stop being led around by their nose rings by the groups/organizations/corporations who they have sold their progressive souls to.

The current lot deep down know what needs to be done, they just can't say it because they're in a quandary.

That's an interesting point about being compromised. It's what tends to happen to elected officials who remain in office too long, or have been brought in with an agenda or ideology beholden to a party.

Conversely, newcomers tend to get banged on by those who simply want to retain their current power, for not having enough experience but that's a lame excuse to seek the potential of someone who isn't on the inside.

All the warning signs and protest were there concerning the harm a MAT clinic would have on the community. Below are quotes from the larger articles from 2019-2020. Read the full articles. The hindsight is amazing.

Now, the warning signs, concerning the increase in crime, are being shouted out, but not heeded. Will future crimes be a reason to come back and quote the past warning signs given by to county leaders by CCWD?

Jeff Tozzer: A Child Was Victimized — and Clallam County’s Leaders Still Don’t See the Emergency

August 2, 2019 Peninsula Daily News Facility foes fill forum: Community raises alarm about MAT clinic

Area residents state questions and concerns at meeting

SEQUIM — Most of those who spoke at the latest Sequim City Council meeting indicated that they don’t want a Medication-Assisted Treatment center coming into town.

“This isn’t politics; this is real life,” Goodwick said. “These are your family members, your neighbors, your coworkers.

December 2, 2020 Sequim Gazette UPDATED: Hearing Examiner to issue decision by Dec. 18 on MAT clinic

• Location

Spence reiterated SOS’s position that they agree with opioid treatment, but not the location of the tribe’s proposed clinic NEAR BUSINESSES, RESIDENCES AND RETIREMENT FACILITIES

Tribal leaders chose the property, he said, because it was discounted $600,000, close to a highway, faces the mountains and is CLOSE TO THE TRIBE’S JAMESTOWN FAMILY CLINIC.

• Transportation

Simcosky said they won’t transport people to the clinic from outside Clallam or Jefferson counties.

However, she said the CITY OF SEATTLE IS COMMITTED TO A PROGRAM BUSING PEOPLE OUT OF THE CITY TO NEIGHBORING AREAS FOR TREATMENT.

While rare, Simcosky said if a patient isn’t accepted, and hey don’t have transportation the TRIBE WOULD TAKE THEM BACK TO THEIR HOME.

• Treatment

MAT patients range from needing treatment for a few months TO A LIFETIME with some needing MORE INTENSIVE SERVICES THAT THE NEW FACILITY WOULD OFFER, he said.

“I truly believe there will be a BENEFIT TO THE COMMUNITY ,” Cunningham said. “As we get MORE PEOPLE INTO TREATMENT, we’ll see less people in the ER, hospitals AND USING OTHER SERVICES.

Eric, thank you, I'm just afraid of where all this crime is heading to. At this pace, it can only get worse. Don't go after the drug addict, go after the drug "kingpin". There needs to be a renegotiation of MAT's impact on the community. There needs to be a lowering of the limits of "clientele" that can be served. If that limit is reached and becomes "full capacity" then Seattle and other surrounding communities will not be able to bus them here until there is an opening.

We need to ask ourselves, what percentage of the problems Mat clinic has caused against Clallam County property taxes because of increased crime? What percentage should JST contribute to the county for a problem they created and are profiting off of? JST has the mind set that grants are the end all. JST does not need more grants. Take profits from the MAT clinic, give it to the county to increase the paid salary and number of the police force. That is their responsible part of harm reduction.

The more I read, the more incredulous it is. The MAT clinic has exacerbated and overwhelmed Clallam County's resources, yet has not stepped in to alleviate the problems they created. Had they built the facility in Blyn, as they could have, it would have distanced many of the problems we are facing now. The Tribe would have had to deal with problems, at their cost, and not ours. If the MAT clinic had to be built in Blyn, would they have built it?

"Tribal leaders chose the property, he said, because it was discounted $600,000, CLOSE TO A HIGHWAY, faces the mountains and is CLOSE TO THE TRIBE’S JAMESTOWN FAMILY CLINIC"

The comparison to Brave New World misses the point completely. Huxley wasn’t condemning compassion; he was warning about a society that suppresses emotion to maintain control. In fact, he argued that complete prohibition of mind-altering substances “tends to backfire and creates more evils than it cures,” and advocated for “new and less harmful ones.”Harm reduction isn’t about sedation, it’s about survival. It’s about keeping people alive long enough to feel anything at all. There’s a world of difference between numbing people into obedience and giving them tools to survive. And honestly, what someone finds funny says a lot about them. If your first impulse is to mock efforts to keep people from dying, that’s not wit , that’s a glimpse of your character. And it’s not a flattering one.

"Harm reduction isn’t about sedation, it’s about survival."

That's actually a deep subject. Everyone dies eventually, so how long is the survival time line? What metrics are we collecting? If every time a user gets a fix considered a save?

How many people aren't pushed to actually getting life altering treatment vs being held down by the system and eventually succumbing to their sickness?

Expand full comment
Powdermonkey's avatar

That’s not a deep question; it’s a deeply disturbing one. If your instinct is to treat survival as a statistical inconvenience, maybe ask what kind of society you’re trying to build. Harm reduction isn’t about saving everyone forever. It’s about refusing to let people die needlessly while we wait for perfect solutions. If that doesn’t register as worthwhile, the problem isn’t with the metrics. It’s with the mirror.

Expand full comment
MK's avatar

While we wait for perfect solutions. That utopia is not achievable, and you know it. Yet you toss it out for some convenience I'm guessing.

We need encompassing metrics to make valid decisions, and until they are available then how can we know we're making the best decision for society, and understand the problem?

You're close to this in some way, it's clear in the manner you responded.

And I do look on the mirror frequently, and adjust where it makes sense. I certainly don't have a closed mind to considering other POVs/evidence which I would hope everyone does.

Expand full comment
Powdermonkey's avatar

I’m rejecting fatalism. Harm reduction isn’t about waiting for perfect solutions. It’s about using the tools we already have to prevent death and disease now, while we keep working to make the system better over time.

We’re not flying blind. We have decades of real data showing fewer overdose deaths, lower rates of HIV and hepatitis, and more people connecting with treatment. Those aren’t guesses. They’re results.

HIPAA also affects how medical data is handled, and different counties, clinics, and nonprofits track things in their own ways. That makes it harder to see the full picture, but that’s a coordination issue, not proof the data doesn’t exist. The evidence is there, it’s just scattered and buried in reports most people never see.

Public health folks talk in spreadsheets and cautious language, while fear spreads in stories and memes. So it’s not that the evidence isn’t real, it just doesn’t travel well. The system rewards outrage over accuracy, and scientists aren’t trained to tell stories that stick. That gap is where a lot of the confusion (and fear) comes from.

And no, I’m not personally affected. I just care about things that don’t directly impact me. That’s called empathy, and it’s part of being a decent citizen, not a flaw.

If my clarity makes you uncomfortable, maybe ask why something has to touch your own life before it matters to you. The systems we build shape all of us, whether we feel the impact up close or not.

Expand full comment
Cindy Robins's avatar

Harm reduction is not working. It’s enabling users to continue using safely when they should be thinking of the consequences and making the decision to stop using because they don’t want to get diseased, which they already are in a sense, or die. I know, users have lost their survival of life mode but we shouldn’t be artificially adapting their instincts for them.

Expand full comment
Powdermonkey's avatar

To argue otherwise is to say: just let them die.

Harm reduction isn’t about perfection; it’s about refusing to let people die while we wait for ideal solutions. If you oppose that, you’re not debating policy. You’re making peace with preventable death.

The agency I was with in another state, reguarly througout the year, designated officers/deputies would receive a list of the registered offenders and their addresses. We would go to each residence and confirm if they were there. If not there, it was noted and warrants were issued. And the agency would also make it known to the public after this was done, that it had conducted a sweep and list how many were arrested, how many were in violation etc. Interaction and notification by the PIO (public information officer) is crucial for the citizens.

Another incident involving innocent children that completely fell through the cracks was the story regarding the family of seven children whose parents stabbed the door dash driver. I was shocked and frankly embarrassed to read that when the father was stopped and arrested for doing donuts in the PA Safeway Parking lot with all seven children and the wife in the vehicle, Law Enforcement left the seven children with the mother instead of placing them in protective custody. At that point, the children should have been removed from parental custody and placed with DCFS. I know how much time it takes to place one child, and there were seven, but it is part of the job. We serve and PROTECT no matter how much time it takes. There are no excuses. Whatever agency responded to that call completely dropped the ball and left seven innocent children in an extremely dangerous situation.

A few hours later the father was released from custody. The seven children were then forced to witness their father brutally attack with a knife the good Samaritan that picked them up. The children were eventually found with their parents passed out in the stolen vehicle. This situation could have resulted in an even more tragic outcome for the children involved, and it is likely they will experience lasting effects from witnessing their parents' actions.

As a law enforcement officer, you take an oath. You swear. Plain and simple, this is another blatant and disturbing example of Law Enforcement not doing their job to protect and serve the most innocent and vulnerable in our community.

Well said, from another retired LEO. Absolutely, the calls with children take time, agreed, but we take an oath as you said, no matter how long it takes!!!

Aren’t calls involving children turned over to public health? Reported to CPS and followed up by that agency? Are there any social workers or Child Protective Services in Clallam County? I swear my forever house is looking more like south of CC. I saw a picture of that driver after he was stitched up. It was truly horrible. Like a big Z.

But the criminal wasn’t held in jail. What a great community.

Thank you D Marie. Question: Do you think the low ratio of police to population has over-strained the police dept in Clallam County to the point of them not being able to do their job?

I am sure the low ratio of officers to population, which is highest in WA state, is an issue. Some agency no longer respond to alarm calls or other low priority calls. However when innocent children are involved you simply cannot use lack of officers as an excuse. You can’t.

Question: Does funding in each dept play a role in whether to prosecute or hold individuals or investigate? Also, is moral lower when police can't get the support they need? I'm sincere in my questions.

The police make the arrest, and investigate crimes. However law enforcement has nothing to do with making the decision to prosecute and hold someone accountable. That is the district attorney, or prosecutors office who makes that decision.

If safety is the priority , then fund it by tax payers. So what if it is 50 percent of the budget, quit the fish barrier BS and the round abouts. Leadership isn’t a quality it’s a commodity purchased from the JST ask Ozias!

Thank you for this statement They also released the father after booking him for illegal possession of dangerous weapon, that should have been another reason to keep him away from the kids longer.

WHAT!!? "It is important to note that the Sheriff’s Office cannot legally dictate where sex offenders may live. Unless restricted by a court order or conditions of Department of Corrections supervision, offenders are constitutionally free to choose their residence."

That is a BIG problem.

For 90k the Sheriffs Office better be getting a little more creative. Sometimes I need a barf bag when I read CCWATCHDOG.

The topics, not the authors. Jeff doesn’t even make me nauseous anymore!😉

Good neighbors may need to identify local sex offenders so they are encouraged to move. I would not let my dog play in a fenced yard with a sex offender neighbor.

It’s a mental disorder, illness, choice.

What happened to those really cool institutions that housed crazy people? Sorry, one “fly over” the cuckoo nest isn’t enough”!

I apologize to normal, crazy people, you know who you are.

I am so over being PC🤷‍♀️
